Fabrics made from wool have greater bulk than other textiles, provide better insulation and are resilient, elastic and durable. Limited supply and exceptional characteristics have made wool the world’s premier textile fibre.
Although wool has some advantages when compared to other natural fibers (better insulation, longer lifespan, washed less frequently) it also has a larger impact on natural resources – from the management of livestock to the transformation of raw wool.
Even though it is arguable that wooly animals can actually help to improve soils by increasing the organic matter in the soil the ethics and sustainability of wool can be complicated if the wool is not certified organic.
Furthermore the transformation of raw wool into a usable fibre usually uses greats amounts of water and energy. Furthermore this washing process uses many hazardous chemicals such as endocrine disruptors and chlorine.
Conventional wool sustainability is a messy discussion but it is certain that no synthetic fiber can truly replace it.
Organic cotton is generally defined as cotton that is grown organically from non-genetically modified plants, and without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides.

GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.
The aim of the standard is to define world-wide recognized requirements that ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labelling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.
Textile processors and manufacturers are enabled to export their organic fabrics and garments with one certification accepted in all major markets.
